I recently stumbled on what might be the greatest Moon River cover of all time. Becky from The Honey Trees has a voice on her that damn well slays me and I know I've posted Moon River here before but it's family significance has only increased since Bo and Revi were born.
When I was pregnant with Archer I would sing, "twoooo drifters, off to see the world" and think about Hal and me and how that's kind of what we were. To each other anyway. "We're after the saaaame rainbow's end..." It was a wonderful thought to have about the stranger that would soon become the father of my child. And he, Archer was the dream maker, the heartbreaker, wherever you're going, I'm going your way...
And then. When Archer was born and I would sing to him alone, the "two drifters" were us.Because at the time I felt very alone. And Archer was my closest ally.
Years later, when Fable appeared on the scene, the two drifters became them.
"Twooooo drifters. Off to see the world. There's such a lot of world to seeeeeeee." and Archer and Fable would close their eyes and I'd imagine them with little knapsacks on, walking around a cartoonish globe.
And then last summer, pregnant with the twins, I'd serenade them with the same words. Two drifters... there's such a lot of world to see.
And now I sing to all four. Because twice in the song there are mentions of drifters.
...There's such a lot of world to see.
