Yesterday, a lovely girl named Ashley posted the following video on my facebook wall. She thought I might like which I totally did. So much so I thought I'd share it here (for those of you who haven't seen.) And this is why I love the Internet. It's like passing notes in first period without getting into trouble. Sharing ideas and stories and articles and videos and everything that means something to and from ourselves. As someone who once dreamed of becoming a poet, (shut up, don't laugh) who was told, "no one cares about poetry" ... "unless you're Jewel" ... "and you're not Jewel even close" ... it's pretty exciting to see that this lovely video, posted not three weeks ago already has a million views:

Major fist pump.

Thank you, Ashley. And thanks to all of you for sharing your videos and stories, links and articles, blogs, music, photographs, essays and selves with me over the years. Love that we all get to sit beside one another in this massive, inspired classroom. Alone, kind of, but not really.

Loved it... loved seeing the Canadian flag flying in the background as well. ;-) Now must share with EVERYONE!

Isn't it weird though? I would have liked someone to have made this when I was an alone and angsty young renegade, back in the single days when I had no one but a pen and paper and guitar to keep me company, and how I lonnnnnnnnnged just for someone to be there, too.

Now with a frickin' houseful of babies and animals and husbands and rugrats the only bloody time I'm alone is if I'm asleep. Hehehe.

Love you all, girlies!

Love it, brightened my particularly dreary London summer day. Thanks to you and Ashley for sharing it. Reminds me of the Buddhist quote: "Solitude is happiness for one who is content."

I saw this one recently and LOVED it and am so glad you posted it again because I just played it for Ivy.

So many good things.

Thank you for posting this. As you so often do, you captured the essence of a mood and shared the love. Not to sound too sappy or stalker-ish, but I love your writing and this site.

Absolutely. Loved it. The irony is that now that I'm a mother, I crave being alone like a drug. So while I loved the video and the poem, I don't need convincing that being alone is okay. :)

My roommates and I are separating and each getting our own places at the end of the month - one of them sent me this a couple of weeks ago and it made me feel so much better about everything.

Adrianne | 7:39 AM

Wow. I feel all tingly inside after watching that. I'll be posting this one to my blog as well:) Thanks for sharing!

"Resist the urge to hang out with your cell phone." Yep, she was talking to me. Gotta work on that.

Missy | 8:59 AM

Boy did I love this... thanks for sharing!

Glenda | 9:54 AM

I love this blog! It makes me feel good being a young mother/wife and all the weird, crazy, yet normal stuff that I go thru everyday...as opposed to some other high fling, out of touch, doesn't talk about motherhood anymore only about nyc trips and insanely huge homes they just purchased..eh hem...dooce. Sorry to talk smack, I just dropped a grilled cheese on the floor and I am feeling a little snarky.

Amanda | 12:23 PM

That was awesome! Thanks for sharing it! :)

That is an absolute gem. Thanks for sharing.

I love being alone and really love it when I get a break from the babies. Love the idea of going dancing all by yourself!

Love your "class note" analogy. Very fitting! But, it's so sad, with the proliferation of cell phones kids don't really pass notes anymore. I'm a HS teacher and used to find really great notes on the floor in my classroom and last year I think I found one--and it wasn't even a juicy one.

This is beautiful. I'm so glad you shared it. It's just what I needed at this point in my life.

On facebook do you let people you don't know add you? (People being me. :) ) Or is it for your friends & family?

GIRL'S GONE CHILD | 10:56 PM

Yes, Maria. I'm friends with all who are friendly. xo!

And cord, that just broke my heart. What is high school without note passing? Ugh.

Andi | 12:10 AM

Rebecca, I sent you an email about a quest I'm on. I've been thinking for a long time about this quote I'm obsessed with for my wedding. It just seems to be so me! But I need help in locating some artistic talent. I need somebody to make my poem come alive, more than just words on a page.

Readers... can any of you make a youtube video like the one Rebecca jsut posted? Claymation, animation, still images..? I jsut want something beautiful set with the words to Resignation by Nikki Giovanni.

I can pay for time and effors. I want to use this video for my wedding.

Grumble Girl | 8:44 AM

I love that "how to be alone" short film too... a friend posted in on my FB as well. Man, I love social media.

Awesomeness. Loved how she said "loneliness is a freedom" and now that I'm rarely alone, I so feel her.

Thanks for sharing!

I first saw the video a few weeks back and it just made me cry. Being a single mum with zero social life I get harassed (lack of a better word:-P ) for not being social or in a relationship. I am a solitary creature, even though I have no alone time with a soon to be 4 year old. However, my point is; I loved loved it and have contantly replayed it.

Your kids - awesome and gorgeous as always

Sabrina | 6:01 PM

She probably shouldn't have made that because now EVERYONE is going to want to hang out with her! GAH! That was SO AMAZING, I can't even wrap my head around it. The poetry, the flow in how it was delivered. I feel like Eminem needs to jump on that for a sample before this girl gets super famous! Thank you for posting this. Will tweet, and e-mail to all those I love.

Emily | 7:10 PM

I needed this. Thanks for posting and sharing it.

Hilary | 7:11 PM

Beautiful! This made me want to be alone.

Gina | 7:50 PM

I'm getting caught up on your blog and had to comment on the alone video. I posted it on my blog earlier this week. It spoke to me so deeply. I could watch it again and again.
