Gone Style: Summer Beauty for Face and Head

*ED: Updated with winner, below*

Ugh. The heat. Am I right? Am I right? What's a girl to do with her sanity when it's 673893 degrees outside. Hair? Makeup? What the fuck, sun! What. The. Fuck. Sometimes the best way to fight fire? Is with fire, baby! Bomp-chicka-wow-wow...

...So let's talk summer must-haves and quick tips for staying hot hot (in-the) heat.

First. Bangs. Ugh, you guys. As someone who has had bangs for most of her twenty-nine years, I must tell you, bangs and summer? Not a great mix. Sticky bangs are not cute and it's sort of impossible to avoid their cement-sweat-yuck when it's 102 degrees. Or even 89.

So? Unless you plan on carrying dry shampoo on your person all day long...

Which brings me to summer must have #1: Dry Shampoo! I've written about dry shampoo before complete with before and after photos. I use Klorane, which came recommended via the lovely Liz and has since changed my life. I wash my hair, at most, twice a week but work out at least three times a week so dry shampoo is mas importante. Helps me control the grease monkeys that live in my locks.

I digress. Back to bangs. (That's what she said.)

I have bangs.
IMG_4761
Hello, bangs.

But in the summer, they disappear:
IMG_4790
Goodbye, bangs.

Bobby pins are my friend and I take advantage of their loyalty to my scalp by utilizing them on the daily. Headbands, too. Which brings me to my next summer must-have: #2. Bobby Pins. A three-dollar pack will last you all summer. Just pull bangs back and pin voila.
IMG_5073
IMG_4802
But not before you... #3. Flat Iron!

I was never a huge flat iron fan until I was recently introduced via Nancy O'Dell/Momversation who offered to send me the Rusk w8less flat iron + blow dryer a few months back. I am now obsessed and the flat iron (I blow dry my hair once in a blue never. Don't have the patience for it.) and have ordered everyone I know to snag themselves one. To be fair, before giving the Rusk a whirl I had only ever used to same straightener since high school, which could very well have been expired/broken. Regardless, this babe is solid. I totally recommend. (See above pics for post flat-ironed awesome.)
IMG_3754
(For reference, this is what my hair looks like when I wake up after sleeping on it wet. Pardon my early-am, pre-coffee man-face.)
IMG_3651
Poodle-riffic.

And speaking of faces that look less mannish with a bit of makeup...

Makeup in the summer is a subtle art. Waterproof mascara is disasterville - will break your eyelashes off within a week and for what? No one's looking at your eyes in the pool, anyway. They're looking at your boobs. In my case they're looking at my boobs and then promptly looking away. Two breast reductions and two babies have fucked my shit clear up but it doesn't really matter anyway because I'm married. April fools, Hal! Forever April fools!

Seriously, though. If I'm going anywhere near a pool or body of water, I stay away from eye-makeup completely and wear chap stick, tinted-SPF and bronzer. Mainly, for day to day, I go for light, barely-there makeup so people don't think I'm a dude.

BEFORE MAKEUP (ED: AND UTILIZING THE #2 BOBBY PINS!):
IMG_4993
For summer, besides #4 - A Good Facial SPF. I carry Neutrogena's oil-free sunblock stick on me at all times. I use it on the kids, too.

The following are my summer everyday makeup must-haves:

#5. Concealer - for pimples, under-eyes et al. My two favorities are this one by MAC and this by Josie Maran Cosmetics.
#6. Bronzer - been obsessed with the "10" bronzer from Benefit for years now. It's pricey but will last you two years. (Apply with lighter shade up to define cheekbones.)
#7. Neapolitan (shades of) Eyeshadow - (ED: think strawberry, vanilla, chocolate when choosing your three summer shades and then applying them to your eyelids one shade after the other.) In the below photos I'm wearing Josie Maran's "pinkalicious" on inner corner, followed by "sand" and "pewter" on the ends.
#8. A good, light mascara: I'm currently experimenting with Maybelline's Lash Stiletto.
#9. Burts Bees lip shimmer in Watermelon. For pale complexions such as mine, this shade is tops but all Burts shades are awesome and will flatter any skin-tone. Fine one that works for you and buy ten of them. (If you're anything like me, you will lose one every few days.)

AFTER MAKEUP (ED: NEED AN EYEBROW WAX):
IMG_5002
Yeah right. Like anyone can comfortably wear their hair down in the summer. Not me, anyway. My hair sticks to my neck and my skin starts itching and ew. Hair up, por favor.

Enter #9: The messy bun.

IMG_5040
This is how I typically wear my hair in the summer. Unless I know I'm going to be spending the day in an air-conditioned space. Here also is a better view of eye-makeup in three shades.
IMG_5034
Oh and sorry about the pimples. I don't know how to airbrush.

I wasn't thinking very far ahead when I took these pictures this morning. If there's any confusion with the makeup application, please let me know and I'll do a summer-makeup tutorial vid re-cap type situation.

In the meantime, here's a birds-eye view of the messy bun. An ideal nest for birds to rest their weary wings/comfortable and casual way to wear long hair in the summer.
IMG_5057

Mine is powder...right now I use Physicians Formula pressed powder in translucent, and also good ol' Johnson's baby powder. I live in Thailand now, and baby powder is a trick I learned for feeling dry and fresh, even when it's really hot outside.

Sara | 7:09 AM

My summer must-haves are pretty much just mascara and blush. I end up sweating off whatever else I wear!

Emilie | 7:38 AM

Since I have an oily turning quickly to dry skin problem, I can't live without my tonic cleanser by Vichy. In fact, I cannot live without all my Vichy Normaderm products. If you don't have them in the US, may I kindly suggest you move to Québec.

meredyth | 7:47 AM

this is basically my summer style as well. Except sans flat iron. I kinda like the curls that the DC humidity gives me. Also, I feel the same about bangs in summer, blow drying and hair UP! thanks for the dry shampoo tip, I've been looking for one.

Anna from Rhode Island | 7:48 AM

Summer must-haves: Aveda Lip Tint SPF 15 in Apricot (best stuff ever!), a bunch of bobby bins and cute stylish headbands, and a fab pair of sunglasses! I try to be pretty low-key in the summer in terms of makeup (it all sweats right off anyway), but some cute headbands and great sunglasses help me feel cute and put together even when it's one million degrees! My last must-have is a cute summer frock. Nothing makes me feel cuter in hot weather than a lovely little summer dress!

Thanks, Rebecca!

Kristen | 8:05 AM

Garnier face lotion with SPF 30, bobby pins, a little bronzer, and a good pedi.

Love the eye color ideas in your post!

Danielle | 8:39 AM

I loathe the heat but I'm trying not to be such a complainer. But it's hard. Because it's REALLy hot.

1. Mac mineral powder.
2. Low pigtails or braids (shoulder-length, wavy, I mean frizzy, hair).
3. Mascara and MAC lipstick.

Hope I win! This hair could use some straightening.

Haley | 9:21 AM

Fun post! I wouldn't have noticed pimples if you hadn't mentioned them btw (even then, not a big deal).

Do you do the bun with just bobby pins?? I always end up using a big ugly clip because my hair is ridiculously thick and it's fast, but your hair looks so cute in the messy bun that I think it would be worth the effort. : )

Sarah Wilson | 9:28 AM

Kiehls SPF 50 and headbands galore.

orngpikkle | 9:33 AM

loose powder and a gaggle of ponytail holders.
i live in ponytails all summer long.

poo mama | 9:48 AM

i can't live without eyeliner. right now i'm using bobbi brown's long-wear gel liner. stays put even in the summer!

i've been using a big barrel curling iron to tame my hair for years. your post has me really want a straightening iron now. thanks for the rec!

Susanna | 10:11 AM

My summer must have is definitely my Bare Escentuals/Minerals makeup. It is so lightweight and never melts or rubs off!

Anonymous | 10:22 AM

Definitely deep conditioner for my hair so it doesn't get too dry and frizz out after 5 seconds. Its just too hot to blowdry my hair everyday, so I usually pin it up in little knots to dry which makes it nice and wavy and not frizzy!

Also, I have this lip crayon that is a fun bright pink that is my favorite thing right now. And of course, fun bright summery-colored nails.

Tiffany in Reno

carly | 10:26 AM

Those little blotter paper packs from Sephora (I like the lavender), Rosebud salve for lips and eyebrow wrangling, and brown kohl liner. Oh! And Tarte cheekstain stick stuff in Tickled. I've been using it since you recommended it on a tutorial forever ago and do not know how I ever lived without it.

Sonja | 10:26 AM

I've got long thick hair too, but no bangs, a pony tail holder is a must. I do all kinds of crazy up do's with them. Next, here in the South, Certain-Dri is the ONLY thing I've found that works. Sweat stains will ruin the cutest outfits - especially when they're made cheap! Finally, my new favorite line is e.l.f. which I knew was online, but just discovered in Target. I feel naked without mascara so I am using their waterproof/"normal" mascara duo plus their All Over Color Stick in Pink Lemonade. For $1 you can't beat it! I also replaced ALL of my old makeup brushes too and love their quality. Which brings me to my last must have: tweezers. e.l.f.'s tweezers ROCK! They really give my Tweezerman's a run for their money!

Meagan J. | 10:39 AM

headbands!

Clare | 10:40 AM

I'm a slave to bobby pins as well for my bangs in the summer. Also, bare minerals foundation in fairly medium, and baby powder. Oh, and carmex moisture plus.

And the apricot burt bees baby oil.

Chanel | 10:53 AM

I have to say your a little late on your discovery of the flat iron. Us black girls have been living [and dying] by them for years. I have a few summer essentials myself:

1. Body Shop Body Butter in Satsuma Orange: it's light enough to keep you moisturized and soft all day and the smell is divine. I skip perfume in the summer because of the heaviness of the scent but this serves both purposes.

2. OPI for Sephora Mermaid To Order- It's in amazing shimmery blue nail polish. It drives amazingly quick and it's the perfect fun shade for a hot summer day.

3. Ouchless Ponytail Holders- I love these things. They don't take out your hair like other ponytail orders and they come in a variety of shades to make your hair color or to go with your outfit.

wumples | 10:56 AM

I make my own summertime powder by mixing a dab of concealer and some water with cornstarch. After pressing it into a thin mold and letting it dry, it basically crumbles into a super-fine powder. It absorbs oil, and it totally invisible from the addition of concealer. Follow it with chapstick and some light mascara, and I'm good to go! :D

birdykins | 11:23 AM

My summer must haves are leave-in conditioner/mousse (summer sun = dried up sad summer hair), Clinique bronzer, and spf everything. :)

Anonymous | 11:23 AM

Ponytail holder for sure! And lip stuff with sunscreen. That's pretty much it besides a little bit of mascara. Plain and simple if I'm going to be in the hot hot heat.

Lindsey Fyfe | 11:26 AM

here in scotland, the sun has barely come out this summer! I only wish I could be sticking to my normal LA summer routine of:

sunscreen
lemon for hair
burts bees lip shimmer
benefit lip tint

BonJoey | 11:36 AM

I hardly ever blow-dry and flat-iron my wavy/curly hair in the summer due to the fact that it takes 45 minutes and it's sure to only last one day because I'll probably go swimming or something and ruin all the work I just did! So I use Infusium 23 spray detangler and just let air dry and it works really well to tame the frizzyness and accentuate curls. Other than that, I use Origins A Perfect World face cream on my face at night to repair (I live in Las Vegas - super dry!) and Proactive's light face lotion w/ spf 15 during the day. A sunscreen I super love that is great and pretty much chemical-free is Eminence Organics Sun Defense SPF 30. It's expensive, but it really works and it's super-fab.

Jessica | 11:43 AM

Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen.

jkaye | 11:53 AM

neutrogena face lotion - spf 45... don't wanna get wrinkles!! oh, and lise watier gel blush.

Darrah | 12:02 PM

Must haves for the hot Dallas summer:

Sunblock - I've been using the mineral/baby one from Neutrogena lately and like it....not too sticky or heavy.
Tinted Moisturizer w/spf - I like Josie Maran's. Neutrogena also has a good one.
Face blotting papers
Body powder - Lush's Silky Underwear is my current fav.
Beach/Salt spray for hair - I'm liking the one by Blow right now.
Fresh Sugar Rose tinted lip balm - Perfect amount of color and it has spf.

L | 12:04 PM

I had keratin treatment a couple of months ago and I'm so glad The Crazy is gone from my hair :) Flat irons make my hair very staticy, so no can't do... No need to enter me in the prize giveaway, by the way - I live too far to ship the stuff :) I ordered some of that dry shampoo and some Burts stuff from Amazon after reading your post - I'm overeager and spontaneous like that :)

Nicholle | 12:14 PM

I have bangs too and so not fun in the summer. Bobby pins and headbands have been my best friend. And leave in conditioner for my dry frizzy hair!

Anonymous | 12:21 PM

Obsessed with your appearance much?
I know you're narcissistic but why the hell do you think anyone would want to look like you? Instead of the breast reductions you should have spent your money (or your parents' money) on a nose reduction. That's some honker you've got there! And you're gonna want to do something about those forehead wrinkles before you lose your children in them. Those dudes are deep. How old are you, anyway? You've got some hard miles on you even though you keep trying to set the odometer back.

I am totally with you about keeping it easy in the summer. A ponytail holder, mascara and some bronzer. Its the only time of year that the freckles don't bug me so much!!

moljoe | 12:39 PM

Comfy nursing bra so when I'm sweating and nursing at least I'm comfortable!

Melanie | 12:41 PM

My summer must haves are chap stick with spf and Banana Boat's after sun aloe lotion. I love this lotion because it soothes your skin after being in the sun and holds your tan longer!

JZ | 1:02 PM

Keeping it real, by keeping it light. Light makeup, light hair product, light clothes...Now, pick me to win the flat iron or the eyeshadow. XOXO

DrL/K | 1:04 PM

I love my Bobbi Brown bronzer, her Beach fragrance, waterproof mascara and Bare Escentuals Buxom lipgloss - any shade!

Great hair and makeup tips - thanks for sharing!

Bookworm | 1:22 PM

Must have moisturizer with sunscreen for fair Irish skin. Maybe scissors to chop off my long thick heavy hair? I always want to cut it off in the summer. Thanks for the great tips.

Kate | 1:49 PM

Sunscreen! I know that sounds incredibly boring and PSA-y, but as a redhead I can't afford not to wear it. Ten minutes out in the sun without sunscreen, and I'll be nursing a burnt skin for weeks.

Unknown | 2:06 PM

Must haves: #1 Sunscreen: I am constantly forcing my family to wear it. #2 Dread Wrap. Keeps my dreadies from getting into things like salt water and keeps my neck sweat free.

Kila Bell | 2:21 PM

Must have for summer...spf burts lip for sure!!!

Liz | 2:34 PM

I switch out my Bare Escentuals routine and just do Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer, benefit posietint (like benetint, but red instead of pink), a swish of bronzer, and some lip gloss...maybe some mascara. If I load on too much stuff, I just sweat it off anyway.

my e-mail is karma dot points at yahoo dot com

Karin | 2:35 PM

I get my hair cut really short for the summer!

rutty1221 | 2:57 PM

A ponytail holder and a headband usually, but I might just steal the flower idea from one of your readers! :-)

Hannah V. | 3:00 PM

My MAC foundation. Without it, I look like I've had a death in the family.

Unknown | 3:24 PM

The curling iron that becomes just a barrel when your husband removes that annoying little lever that only gets in the way - - A heat protective glove - - MAC cream color base in Shell - - Rimmel Bronzer - - MAC pink poodle lip gloss.

Beth | 3:27 PM

Neutrogena facial moisturizer with SPF 15, Urban Decay eyeliner, Almay mascara, and reddish lip gloss. I work in a hospital unit that keeps the temperature up above 80 all of the time, so even in January, my summer look is on :)

Morchelley | 3:54 PM

mascara, blush, and lipgloss are my summer must haves. my very favorite mascara is buxom at sephora. it is light but makes your eyelashes sooo long abd beautiful.

rachel | 3:58 PM

Bedhead Ego Boost, Kiss my Face peach lip gloss, Trish McEvoy blackberry & vanilla musk, Kiss my Face lavender deodorant, Stridex pads for sweaty face & pits

Heather Maxwell Hall | 4:09 PM

def flat iron, laura mercier stickgloss lip color (sheer and silky), some kind of vibrant/crazy color on my nails, and major SPF

rachelopoly | 4:15 PM

dry shampoo! I use Oscar Blandi.

Kate | 4:22 PM

lipgloss, hairtie and mineral powder sunscreen

hollysill | 4:23 PM

Bobbie pins and lots of sleep. No sleep = dark circles, which need concealer, which then gets GROSS in the summer heat.

Kind of love that you swear on your blog. Makes me feel more normal for using profanity in emails to friends :)

Dear Mason... | 4:28 PM

Summer must have= tinted sunscreen! Keeps my freckles at bay and helps tell the ones trying to sneak in to step the huckleberry fin off!

comicshopgrl | 4:44 PM

My favorite summer makeup includes Neutrogena's tinted moisturizer with SPF 45. The best tip I can give is to get an eyeshadow primer. I use the one Bare Essentials makes. You use it before putting on your eyeshadow. Sweat can run down your face and your eyeshadow won't melt. I'm training for a marathon and have time to do my short runs at lunch. I'll take off my foundation but keep my eye makeup on for time's sake. It looks great after 6 miles in Baltimore heat. I love it!

Amanda | 5:03 PM

Neutrogena Healthy Skin Glow Sheers Makeup SPF 30. Just enough coverage for summer, doesn't melt off, and sun protection!

Karen Chatters | 5:13 PM

The other day I'd decided that I wasn't going to survive one more minute with my hair and the heat and I chopped it all off. That was my summer must have, no hair.

I am in dire need of a new flat iron, I was just thinking about that this morning. I'm pretty sure the one I have is frying my hair to a crisp, even with all the humidity.

Rebecca | 5:28 PM

Redken glass! Smooths the fly-aways and frizz.

Milou's Mama | 5:30 PM

Chapstick I have only found while on vacation at a little booth in Pike's place market in Seattle, and....yeah that's about it. I'm not brave enough to put stuff on my face in the 100+ degree heat of Los Angeles, but maybe I'm not using the right stuff?

Mena | 5:45 PM

My must-have:

a good de-frizzer (I like Garnier Fructis)

And only one or two pieces of clothing, usually a long, flowing dress, or a light shirt and skirt, paired with flipflops. I'm such a lazy (clean!) hippie in the summer.

Shannon Locker | 6:14 PM

Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay-this stuff is a miracle. I swear it's erased wrinkles.

Johnson and Johnson's baby wash as a facial cleanser-I used to use Purpose but turns out it is the same solution but loads cheaper.

Lush products are awesome. Makes my bathing enjoyable and skin nice. Love the Vegan products.

I used to wear make up but 2 kids, 19 months apart, youngest just turned a year, later I am lucky if I get a shower!

Karen | 6:49 PM

I love Origins Have a Nice Day SPF moisturizer. Great stuff!

Missy | 7:10 PM

My summer must-have is the diffuser attachment for my blowdryer. I prefer to work with the humidity instead of against it, so I go for a wavy, crazy, bed-head look alllll summer.

And I have to say (cuz I've thought it for awhile now) that despite your pimple/man-face talk nonsense, I think you have really gorgeous glowing skin. I'd love it if you do a gone style about skin care someday. Maybe it's b/c you eat so healthy??? Or because you have such a happy life??? Whatever it is you're doing - keep it up!

aclearcutsign | 7:33 PM

bobby pins, hair elastic, tinted moisturizer, concealer, a multi-purpose cream product, lip balm and blotting sheets/Starbucks napkins

Christine | 8:02 PM

I don't shampoo my hair in the summer. It's less awful than it sounds; it just means that my scalp gets trained out of producing oil. I use coconut oil on the length every week to keep the waves shiny and well-defined.

Sunscreen and mascara! Oh, and TONS of water, the fizzy kind.

Kristine | 8:10 PM

My flat iron, some rough paste, and Neutrogena sunblock for my face. I tend to go sans makeup during the summer.

Rosanna =) | 9:05 PM

My must-have ANY time of year is a flat iron! Oh, and lip gloss of some sort.

Deb | 9:19 PM

Bobby pins and waiting an hour and a half to let my hair dry before I flat iron it so I don't have to use the blow dryer.

KateFitz | 9:21 PM

In the summer my skin dries out with all the swimming we do. This is the best moisturizer. http://www.amazon.com/Jason-Natural-Cosmetics-Beauty-Vitamin/dp/B0000535TD

Unknown | 9:37 PM

I feel you on the summer hair troubles! Taming curls in the Texas heat is always a challenge, but the task is much aided by Giovanni Organics Frizz Be Gone and Fekkai Glossing Creme.

SJ | 9:41 PM

self-tanner!

Sara | 9:50 PM

bobby pins, pony tail holder and tons of sun screen

Claire | 9:51 PM

Hmmmmmmmm, I have must-haves-for-all seasons: hair elastics and black mascara... Lusher lashes are a necessity at all times!

Susan Kelley | 9:58 PM

Summer must-haves: tinted SPF moisturizer mixed with a higher SPF moisturizer, Stila smudgepots for eyeliner, a waterproof mascara, and a hat!

Unknown | 11:48 PM

Bobby pins! and rubber bands. I have been growing my hair out for awhile and it's finally long enough for a messy bun. I also have to say skirts and dresses. It's hot!

Abigail | 3:13 AM

Hmm... I go for the hair binders and under eye concealer, paired with golden eyeshadow.

Jen L. | 4:12 AM

The humidity here is out of control so my first must have is anti-frizz. My second must have is spf 30. In the summer I don't leave the house unless it's all over.
For make-up I have to say I love Neutrogena Tinted Moisturizer, I like having a little bit of coverage, without wearing a heavy foundation.

Lindsay Q | 4:24 AM

My summer must haves are also bobby pins; I do the same thing and pin back my bangs. I hate greasy bangs on the forehead! Also, mineral veil from Bare Escentuals helps me control oil throughout the day.

Kim | 6:47 AM

My all the time must have is Josie Maran argan oil. I use it all the time and my skin feels wonderful.

gonzovixen | 7:32 AM

MAC plum perfect tinted lip conditioner with SPF!

roni | 7:33 AM

Clinique Almost Makeup SPF 15 and hairbands hooked with bobby pins in hidden in every bag...even the diaper bag!

Melissa | 7:41 AM

My summer must haves are Physician's Formula powder, whatever SPF containing lip gloss my fickle little heart is in love with at the moment and the Neutrogena sunblock that you are in love with as well.

Tiffany | 8:50 AM

My summer must haves include all over body bronzer, chapstick with SPF, elastic hair bands, and of course bobby pins!

Katie Jane Parker | 9:33 AM

Bobby pins and hair ties, for the same reason. It is too hot to have bangs and to have my hair down. Also dresses just about every day, because I don't wear shorts. And finally lots of sunscreen, because I burn in about two seconds. Right now I really like Neutrogena's spray sunscreen, because it's very lightweight, and seems to work well.

Anonymous | 10:36 AM

SPF moisturizer, SPF lip cover, bronzer, pony tail holder and yes bobby pins!!

Stefanie | 10:47 AM

I just discovered a great mineral makeup on Etsy that doesn't slide off in the heat. That, plus concealer, a little eye shadow (also mineral), and mascara is all I need. Top it off with summery perfume :)

Tonya | 10:52 AM

Definitely my flat iron, still keep up the good ol' chapstick and my mascara - L'oreal Voluminous!!

Michele | 11:04 AM

Summer must-have's: sunblock, lip gloss, ponytail holder, and sunglasses to cover up my tired eyes :)

I would love to see a video of both the eye makeup AND the messy bun. I'm debating going with a bob or keeping my hair long and cutting bangs. I would LOVE to get more ideas for how to deal with my long hair.

mlong | 11:10 AM

Summer must haves...ponytail holder on the wrist at all times. Moisturizer with spf, mascara, and chapstick :)

crisp-rice | 11:12 AM

Mousse for sure! I have short hair, so during the summer, I just scrunch it up and go!

Brittany Cox | 11:14 AM

My summer must haves--
1. I love my "shimmer cubes" eyeshadows from The Body Shop. I picked up a pink, silver, brown, and deep pink colors.
2. Top it off with Clinique mascara and I'm good to go!

I usually keep my hair in a braid in the back. Like you, itchy, hot, sweating neck is not my thing.

KristinaS | 11:26 AM

Summer must haves for me...
-elastic pony tail holders (have them everywhere) for messy buns
-claw clip for a messy french twist
-tinted moisturizer with SPF
-coco butter stick for lips, hands, face, and everything else

erica | 11:42 AM

I must have Bumble and bumble Curl Conscious Creme for messy curly, don't have to blow-dry and style hair. Bronzer, 'cause I DON'T want to look like a leather bag when I'm older, therefore, I am pasty white. Mascara, I know you are not a huge fan of MAC mascara, but I love their Studio Fix Lash!

Unknown | 11:58 AM

My summer beauty must-haves are L'oreal Everpure UV Protect Spray for my reddish highlights, Benefit You Rebel tinted moisturizer with SPF, and an assortment of pinkish-bronze lip glosses.

I miss having long hair to throw up in a bun, but I'm with you on the bobby pins for bangs!

JennH. | 12:12 PM

My summer must haves are my flat iron, although it's last legs, and would love a new Rusk one! Also, brown eyeliner, bronzer and chapstick. Oh, and of course sunblock!

Marcie | 12:50 PM

Summer beauty musts...a friend to french braid my hair, sunscreen and burts bees lip balm! Don't know why I ended with a exclamation mark, nothing really that exciting there. (maybe I'm just excited to think that I might win a give away)

Kiki | 1:00 PM

Awesome post!! Thanks for the suggestions :)
My must haves:
-hair bands
-SPF
-lip gloss w/ SPF
-flowy skirts

Cait | 1:04 PM

My Klorane, sunscreen, and blotting paper. I hate humidity!

Mary | 1:27 PM

Definitely the flat iron for me - I'm pretty low maintenance in terms of beauty routine but if I wear my hear down then I usually flatiron it to combat the frizzy waves that inevitably happen.

Amanda D. | 2:06 PM

My summer beauty must-haves: clinique eyeliner in dark chocolate, fekkai wave spray, aveeno spf moisturizer. You are a brave lady to straighten your hair in the summer (though I LOVE to straighten mine and probably would in the summer if I had A/C).

aprilmae | 3:20 PM

Lots and lots of sunscreen! Living on the California beach and extremely fair skin is not a good combo! Plus bobby pins are year round must have, and braids are summer hairsaver.

SpillingOutBeautiful | 4:02 PM

My summer must have = headbands.

I rock them all the time, everywhere.

emily bilbrey | 4:11 PM

i'm cracking up because JUST before reading this post, i swabbed on some sheer foundation, swiped my cheeks with a shimmery bronzer-blush, and whipped my long hair into a messy top bun. no joke - it's about 90 out right now (which to us washingtonians may as well be 137!) and your summer beauty routine could be my bible. my personal fave summer gear is probably my dozens of pairs of sunglasses - that way i can skip the eye makeup entirely and head straight for the sunnn!

great giveaway, lady! crossing my crossables.

happy summer to ye! cheers!

emily bilbrey | 4:14 PM

oh, and i already entered, but might i just add my other trademark summer beauty tip?

coffee filters for blotting shine! they are LOADS cheaper than fancy blotting papers (which i am absolutely guilty of purchasing) and will leave your makeup in place while soaking up oil & sweat. i cut a few up & store them in an empty compact - stick it my diaper bag in case a photo needs to be taken & i don't want the glare from my forehead blinding the photographer! haha! (;

xoxo!

A.E. | 5:02 PM

MAC zoom lash mascara and shimmery cream eyeshadow for the corners of my eyes.

Allison the Meep | 5:26 PM

I am all about the super lightweight makeup in the schweaty balls summer months. Mineral foundation is the best thing ever - I use Larenim (mineral spelled backwards, those clever makeup people) and lovelovelove it.

Also, shit tons of sunblock, because I'm like Powder's sister or something. Dang.

Sarah | 5:38 PM

Beside an internet connection and bookmarks to articles by ladies more style savvy than me, my current summer must-haves?

Josie Maran's Argan Oil. I know. I KNOW. It might sound all wholesome and natural. But this stuff is magic - ot keeps my hair unfrizzy and my nails less hang-overy and my skin just-right dewy. One bottle!

Add an eyelash curler, Kiehl's lip balm, and some Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer...and I'm good to go.

Mrs. Brightful | 5:56 PM

My summer must haves:

1. flat iron
2. Laura Mercier mineral makeup
3. lip gloss

That's it! Simple...

tetonsam | 6:02 PM

Great giveaway, Rebecca! My summer must haves include bobby pins, rubber bands, and knee-length dresses. It's too hot and humid in Rhode Island to live any other way.

Nothing But Bonfires | 6:41 PM

First of all: Jergens Natural Glow For Face -- makes me look a little bit tan even when I've been slaving in front of a hot computer all summer, doesn't make me break out at ALL, moisturizes like a normal moisturizer (I put it on first thing in the morning), and has an SPF of 25 so I never have to worry about sunscreen. Second of all: definitely with you on the Burt's Bees lip balm. Rhubarb is my color (flavor?)

Lindsay | 6:57 PM

1. Dry shampoo
2. Lots of deodorant
3. Dresses- I try not to wear pants all summer long if I can help it.
4. Air conditioning. Eff the heat.

xoxo

rebeccca b. | 7:13 PM

Summer must-haves: an eyelash curler and light mineral powder foundation. Some days, a light lipstain, too. It's amazing the difference these three make to my face, in less than 30 seconds.

The Mommy One | 7:19 PM

summer must haves: think bronze lipstick by clinique, a ponytail holder and an old flat iron.

thanks for the giveaway!

Unknown | 7:28 PM

Love your style posts Rebecca! My summer must-have: water bottle ALWAYS and light, non-oily sunscreen for my face (I love Aveda's)...

littlemonster | 8:00 PM

i can't live without my mac eyeshadow, and clinique spot remover serum - it evens skin tone and gets rid of sunspots!

arissamasi | 8:11 PM

Must have SPF moisturizer, SPF lip balm, and hairband to keep the wisps from the messy bun off my face!!

Anonymous | 8:19 PM

Mine is bare escentuals mineral veil to keep from being horribly shiny if i'm going to be going out and about in this south Georgia heat.A ponytail holder is a must and I adore my "chicken poop" chap stick(it states on the tube "contains no chicken poop" lol). It has a lovely lavender scent and is just wonderful.

Jen | 8:25 PM

anti-frizz hair products, dry oil body spray to avoid the sticky feeling of lotion when it's hot

marielamar | 8:42 PM

I must have bobby pins and a clippie and chapstick and moisturizer.

Brita Mess | 8:50 PM

Summer must have include mac lipstick in hue with creamsheen gloss in fashion scoop. Also loving mac's opulash mascara for big bold lashes. And, for fun summery bright eye shadows, NYX--super cheap but great!

mairim | 8:52 PM

KISS ME MASCARA. Wear it in the pool, wear it when you're sweating, wear it to a wedding you know will make you cry. It's WONDERFUL! Too bad I lost mine, hafta take care of that.

Walter Helena Photography | 10:54 PM

Holy mols. There's a whole lot of entries here!

My summer must-have is shea butter. My legs fall off without it.

(I'm having a fine-art giveaway of an original WHP giclee print over at my blog if you'd like to stop by!)

xo,
WHP

Jessica | 11:13 PM

My summer must haves are mainly a few ponytail holders and some bobby pins. I have to have the ponytail holders that don't have the metal anywhere on them because my daughter who just turned 3 has hair almost down to her butt already and if it's not put up, begins to look plastered to her head. Not to mention ponytail holders for myself. So at any time there's at least 5 of them in my purse. Some lip gloss/chapstick etc is always needed!

Olivia Singleton | 11:53 PM

My summer must have is U shaped hair pin. I wish I knew the official name of them. Maybe that's why I have such a hard time getting my hands on them? But all the same, they're amazing. They have a little bit more grab than a bobby pin.

How do you achieve your messy bun look? I have attempted the messy bun, but it always looks like I think I'm going to prom.

Unknown | 11:58 PM

I see your bobby pins and raise you two spiral bobby pins! They're like an amazing double helix of hair fantasticness. Perfect for the messy bun (I can never seem to make the messy bun work with a regular ponytail holder).

Also, a keratin treatment on the ol' mane keeps my frizz at bay all summer long.

Kat | 12:51 AM

Not usually all at once, but my summer must-haves are as follows:

Clinique Concealer, Burt's Bees chapstick, Sonya Kashuk eyeshadow four-pack called Rise and Fall (has a bronze and a gold that I adore, the other two shades I could take or leave), MAC lipliner in Beurre, L'oreal Colour Juice lipgloss in Melon Punch (looks bright orange, but it isn't, and goes great over ANY lipstick), Physicians Formula light bronzer, and Chanel Inimitable mascara (so worth the nearly $40)

I'm finally growing my hair back out, and would LOVE a straightener that actually works.

Mosquitos lo-lo-lo-lo-love me, so I carry After Bite in my purse during the summer (http://www.amazon.com/After-Bite-After-Bite-Itch-Eraser/dp/B0027I20NI). If you put it on as soon as you realize there's a bite, it makes it go away SO much sooner and really helps the itching.

Krissy | 6:26 AM

My most haves for summer are a pony tail holder and a couple of bobby pins. I twist my bangs to the side and pin and then put my hair in a low pony tail.

After reading some of the comments I want to try putting a flower in, maybe on a messy side bun.

Maria | 6:36 AM

Flat iron, ponytail holder, bobby pins, lip gloss and bronzer.

Emily | 6:53 AM

My summer must haves include: tinted moisturizer (i love neutrogena), my black elastic headband to push back my bangs at the beach, lip gloss and mascara - the perfect beach makeup combo.

Lisa Morgan | 7:14 AM

Mascara and sunscreen.(Currently using Physician's Formula all natural mascara and Nature's Gate Kid's Sunblock spf30.)
And a large brim hat if I'm going to be out in the sun for more than 2 minutes.
Finally, a hair elastic to put my hair up in a pony or pony twist (put it in a loose pony then tuck the end over an in. It's sort of an old fashioned look but keeps hair out of the way. )

Chelsea | 7:18 AM

messy bun is cute on you!

Rachel | 7:19 AM

Summer must-haves: Aesthe Gentle Scrub and their Purifying Cleanser, Pureology Restorative Hair Treatment to tame those humidity-induced fly-aways, bronzer! due to my current financial situation I am using Almay Smart Shade Bronzer right after moisturizing, Bonne Belle royal cola chaptstick gives just a hint of color and shine. Also love Urban Decay's lipgloss in Doug.

I do the same thing - to bed with wet hair, flat iron it to a respectable state in the morning! My summer must haves = sunscreen and a hair binder (elastic pony tail holder). Every day. =)

And ten points to you for sharing the no-makeup photos! I could never do it.

.ivy

kristofer and ivy | 7:25 AM

I second the above comment - your messy bun looks great! I struggle with getting to a level of messy I'm happy with.

meagan | 7:35 AM

a ponytail holder on my wrist and burt's bees in my pocket!

trish t. | 7:40 AM

I have short hair w/ sideswept bangs, so barrettes are a must on the days I don't really feel like styling. Also, my eyelash curler and CG tinted lip balm are necessities.

Wendi | 7:58 AM

My summer must haves are the headbands from world market and summer dresses.

Ashley | 8:18 AM

I live in the humid, humid south. In the summer I can't live without my Frizz-Ease hair serum. Without it, my hair is a poofy, frizzy mess. Also must always have: clear lip gloss and hair bands, hair bands and more hair bands.

hannah queen | honey & jam | 9:01 AM

summer must haves...burts bees pomegranate chap stick. it's awesome.

Unknown | 9:08 AM

Urban decay primer potion for my sweaty eye lids. That way my eyeshadow stays nice and non creasy.

Ashley | 9:20 AM

Summer must haves: very little shampoo. Baking soda instead! With a vinegar rinse. I agree on the flat iron and head bands, too. Lip gloss with SPF. VERY LITTLE else!

Alexis | 9:35 AM

The humid heat in Florida is beyond ridiculous, so you learn to get creative with you hair, for sure. I have lots of it & I have bangs so I'm with you on the bobby pins.

My new must have are the stay-put headbands by either Goody or Conair. I love that they have a little rubberized coating to keep them in place & now come in several different widths so you can put in more than one for a prettier/messier pulled back look without being all "soccer camp hair" about it.

:)

Unknown | 9:43 AM

bumble & bumble styling lotion for easy hair, clinique almost make-up for evening out skin, spf lipbalm (agree with you, burt's bees in caramel is great) and some fun purple eyeliner for pizazz. sephora makes a terrific, teeny pencil that's the perfect blue/purple for anyone.

Anonymous | 9:53 AM

My Summer must haves: Boots No.7 tinted moisturizer, Maybeline eyebrow powder, lash stilleto in black, Elf waterproof eyeliner (only $1 at Target) in black, Boots No.7 lip Glace in marshmallo.

Nickole | 10:02 AM

Mine are a flat iron (a must for my hair, which is an awful mix of straight and wavy), flip flops, a pair of killer summery sandals, a floppy hat and as many sleeveless shirts as I can get away with. Oh and my tinted moisturizer. Not too heavy and has sunscreen too!

faetra | 10:09 AM

I am the worst in the summer. I think it is my best dressed time of year, but in terms of my beauty regime I need a serious kick in the ass. Generally I just throw on some SPF moisturizer and if I"m feeling really ambitious, some mascara and maybe a light tinted eye shadow. Everything else in the makeup bag pretty much collects dust until the fall. It's just too hot...I sweat every ounce of makeup off within an hour. And my hair is just always up in a messy bun. My hair is naturally curly and I straighten it a lot in the winter, but in the summer I'm just like fuck it...it's going up.

Izzy | 10:17 AM

Bobby pins bobby pins bobby pins, oh and also definately my burts bees lip shimmers

Carra Nicholes | 10:24 AM

My beauty must-have for the summer is a dark mascara, a clear gloss and an eyebrow pensil. I can't stand any heavy face make-up when it's hot (and whats the point if you just sweat it off anyway).

Veronica Vaughn | 10:38 AM

First, Rice paper. I can't leave on a hot summer day without it! Then usually just bronzer, mascara and chapstick.

Lisa! | 10:40 AM

My summer must have is my office mate Stephanie who braids my hair for me. Usually it's a simple French braid but lately we've been having fun with pigtails! Looks cute and keeps me cool!

Emily | 10:48 AM

I use Philosophy's Hope in a Jar moisturizer all year round! It's the only lotion that doesn't break out my skin, plus it's light and smooth and smells heavenly. Also, on days that I don't feel like doing much with my hair - which btw is also poodlerific after the shower - I use Aveda's Brilliant Universal Styling Creme. It's the only product of that type (glossing oils, creams, I've tried them all!) that doesn't make me look greasy in a couple hours. And, oh, it WORKS! On days I want to embrace the waviness of my hair, and look slightly tousled, but not frizzy. It also smells awesome, and it lasts forever because you really truly only need a pea-sized amount, even if you have tons of thick hair like I do. There you have it! Those two are my basic must-haves, even on days when I'm hitting the beach and don't want to wear makeup at all. Glowing, smooth, fresh, yummy-smelling face and hair!

kerrie | 10:50 AM

One word- Sundress!
Another word- Hairspray for fly aways.

The End

Jenn dePaula | 11:01 AM

Gotta go with tinted moisturiser (with built in SPF) and my ponytail accessories (i.e. good old hair band) Keeps the hair off my neck, face and bod...ahhh.

Dawn Myers | 11:04 AM

My summer must haves are the same as my winter. Frizz ease secret weapon for my curly hair, hair tie so I can throw it up at a moments notice and Aveeno body moisturizer with sunscreen

kk gbitz | 11:12 AM

I don't leave home without Neutrogena's make up removing wipes this time of year. When the weather's cooler, I don't have very many occasions when I want my eye make up off immediately, but if a last minute trip to the pool comes up in the summer, I want my make up to come off easily in the car or locker room, rather than smear all over my face in the pool.

Love your long hair tips. I got fed up and cut mine really short for the summer!

Amanda | 11:23 AM

My summer must haves are bobby pins & ponytail holders. I have to have my hair up, Up, UP off my neck. Lately I have been sticking some little flowers in my hair to look a little nicer. I also love the tinted mineral veil from bareminerals. Covers up the sweat & redness easily.

13 double u's | 11:24 AM

My summer must haves are a head wrap/ bandana-esque fabric paired with a messy bun to camouflage bad hair days and Memoire Liquide No. 502 Nudite Absolue perfume which is really light, but fragrant that assists in smelling fresh all day.

Love the makeup tips!

Anonymous | 11:36 AM

Mine is Catwalk "Curls Rock!" hair gel. I have naturally curly hair, and it takes me about an hour and a half to blow dry/flat iron my hair. In the summer it's pointless to waste all of that time, only to sweat back the curl in a matter of minutes.

Another one is lipgloss...gotta have lip gloss. And my SPF face moisturizer. And bobby pins and hair ties.

Anonymous | 11:59 AM

This isn't exactly a product, but my summer must-have is water, and lots of it! Ladies, we've got to keep this thirsty skin hydrated so that it's ready for the SPF and adds a little extra glow under that bronzer. I think of water as the foundation for my foundation. :)

Ashley Parker, 2008 Class Reporter | 12:01 PM

My summer beauty must-haves are hair ties (the elastic, none snag kind that you can snag for less than $3 for a pack of gajillion of them, which is good because I lose them all over the place. I think I have a hair tie in every bag, vehicle, and piece of property I spend more than 5 minutes in), Benefit creaseless cream eyeshadow (http://www.sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P181807&shouldPaginate=true&categoryId=5333)which, I shit you not, does not in fact crease or come off, ever. I love it. You swipe this stuff on and you look fab and natural (I get "RSVP" and "Birthday suit" and blend) in the sweltering hot summer sun, and then lastly I use Kiehl's mascara, which is light & mineral-based, so it doesn't snap of your eyelashes or bug my contacts.
I also use Bare Minerals, but that's a year long deal, not just summer time. I love the post! (also, the wavy hair does not look poodle-riffic! It looks kinda cute!)<3

wonderchris | 12:08 PM

I love how many comments there are on a giveaway post! :)

We have the SAME wake-up hair - so I think my summer essential is gonna be that Rusk straightener! :)

I always use lipstick for a bit of rouge...the powder version gets too...librarian for me.

Anyway, loved the post. You certainly beat the heat by adding some muy caliente via your makeup/hair.

teh_Duchess | 12:29 PM

Summer hair essentials: Headbands, bobby pins, dry shampoo, ponytail holders and either David Babaii for WildAid Bohemian Beach Spray if I'm going wavy or my flat iron if I need it to look styled.

I don't do too much differently for summer in regards to my face. Being fair skinned, I use Philosophy When Hope is Not Enough with spf30 as my year round facial moisturizer and my make up routine pretty much stays the same.

Alexis | 12:30 PM

Mineral veil from bare minerals ... I come from a shiny people. :)

jas | 12:37 PM

my summer must haves are bobby pins and tinted moisturiser.

Amy | 1:17 PM

Summer must haves are definitely bobby pins! My roommates get annoyed because they are constantly stepping on them as I lose them around the house. :) Also, for those of us who can't afford pricey makeup, I love me some Maybelline...everything! Neutrogena is good too, I just make sure everything is oil-free. I use Cetaphil daily moisturizer with spf 15 everyday! On neck and chest too!

Ashley, the Accidental Olympian | 1:27 PM

I too fought and fought and fought my hair in the summer, spring, fall and winter UNTIL I accepted that damn it, I have curls.

Now I rock the curls every day, and all day using Bumble and Bumble curl conscious. Since I have some serious curls that like to frizz I use the heavier product.

http://www.bumbleandbumble.com/product/spp.tmpl?CATEGORY_ID=CAT907&PRODUCT_ID=3965

Accepting my curls mean I finally love my hair.

anythinglime | 1:46 PM

There are a few things that are a must for me.
1: Maybelline NY Shiny-licious number 25: Jam 'n Jelly. I know, could also be perfect for a four-year-old, but it's been my go-to lip gloss for years. I even wore it on my wedding day.
2: Origins Full Story mascara
3: Avalon Organics vitamin C chapstick - this is PERFECT for keeping your lips looking soft and full even during summer chapping/burning.
4: Alba moisturizer.

Love your site!

Kelli C. | 1:51 PM

Sunscreen, sunglasses, and chapstick are all I need for summer! Chasing around 2 small boys gives little time for anything else anyways. And my hair is usually in a bun most of the time so that works for me too.

Sarah | 1:59 PM

Summer must haves...tinted moisturizer, sunscreen and Fresh Sugar Rose Lip Treatment with SPF. Good to know I'm not the only one rockin' the bobby pins to keep sweaty bangs off my head.

Charisa | 2:27 PM

This is sad, but I don't think my make-up and hair change with the seasons! I don't wear much make-up to begin with - maybe I need to experiment more!

Donna Jenkins | 2:48 PM

coconut oil. It works great as a moisturizer, in your hair, for diaper rashes... and for cooking!

divrchk | 2:54 PM

Mascara is my must have. Also, a Kerastase straightening cream for a blow out.

Charlie | 3:40 PM

My Summer Beauty Must Haves:
Ponds Dry Skin Cream: I have dry skin, which gets really bad in the Las Vegas Heat.

Bikini Zone: gets rid of bumps from shaving. A total necessity for those of us with super sensitive skin.

Ulta Powder & Bronzer: ULTA
Mineral Pressed Powder SPF 15 I can't use liquid make-up or anything with an SPF in liquid form when in the sun due to extreme allergic reactions. So this powder gives a nice light finish and the bronzer makes me look less dead.

Jenn | 3:45 PM

My summer must have is definitely bobby pins. My bare minerals makeup helps, too.

Heather Bauer | 3:53 PM

My summer must have is my Clinique Almost Make up. It's a tinted moisturizer with SPF 15 and in the summertime it's my one-stop application for an even complexion, that feels moisturized (but not heavy!) and protected from the sun!

Unknown | 3:54 PM

*origins 'never a dull moment' exfoliator (origins at macy's)

cadencequick | 4:03 PM

I can sooo identify with the long hair summer sweat itch. I use a Goody extra-large claw clip to secure my messy bun. The prongs sit flat against your head so there's no scalp-stabbage when resting your head, and it's easy to unclip and re-secure higher on my head for a little volume. Voila! Benefit Silky Finish lipstick in Skinny Dip gives my lips a glossy sheen without getting matte and cakey, and I use bronzing beads from The Body Shop for a sun-kissed glow. And blotting papers for my sweaty face. Hot. Literally.

Petridish | 5:24 PM

Softlips in "vanilla", jaw clip for serious up do, bobby pins for messy up do and rice paper for blotting oily/sweaty/grease factory face! thisismomma@gmail.com

Laurel | 5:36 PM

A shorter hair style! This heat made me do it!

And I am also extra careful to always have SPF protection on my face. Its my money maker after all (HAH)

Kelly O'Keefe | 5:55 PM

HIP by Loreal jelly balm and Kinerase 50 spf. A little Clinique face powder to balance the geisha effect of the heavy duty spf.
Love your blog!

Really simple, I know, but lotion, and a hat for those humid days (hair is naturally curly) :-)

Unknown | 6:47 PM

Summer beauty must-haves? Laura Mercier tinted foundation plus Tarte cheek stain (can double as lip gloss too!) and a good ol' braid! Braid up, braid French (ooh lala!) braid piggies or get your BFF to braid because you never learned how. It's the perfect "I may not have washed this ish in 5 days but I. MADE. EFFORT." - enjoy the rest of summer!

Kimme | 7:11 PM

Giant sunglasses which protect the skin around the eyes and can double as a headband, overall UV protector (which means sunscreen AND a UV protector for my hair) a tangle free hair tie and lots and lots of tinted lip chaps. I will also put on the concealer/shadow/mascara/light blush if I'm going to be going out, but mainly I let my skin breath. Ever since the first time I grew broke in college and couldn't afford the plethora of skin care creams, lotions and washes (to say nothing about expensive makeup), I've been a bare convert. My face cleared up without all that junk on it and has been clear ever since. I let it be, by and large.

CarrotFlowers | 8:07 PM

Summer must haves:

#1 Fiberwig tube mascara (all the benefits of waterproof, but none of the damage/hassle);

#2 Covergirl outlast lip stain (I hear MAC has a new lipstain, but yet to find the time to try and buy);

#3 Witch hazel for keeping skin squeaky clean;

#4 Hair tie/elastic band to keep locks off neck;

#5 Sesame body oil for shower (lotion makes me too hot);

#6 Some sort of pomade or mousse to keep the frizz at bay;

#7 Essential oil treatment added to my shampoo once a week -- leave on for a minute after lathering. Keeps summer scalp free of product and oils (peppermint, tea tree, and lavender);

#8 Loreal deep conditioner (was very doubtful this would be great stuff... got it when the store was out of Kpak... but it rocks!) Big tub for only $16. Sure beats the $55 I spent for a smaller size of Shu Uemura Silk Bloom deep conditioner, and works just as well.

#9 Pur Minerals face powder if I need to attend meetings/work.

CarrotFlowers | 8:10 PM

tutorial on hair pins please! (i know, seems so simple, but hard to grab the right borders on either side of bangs, and pin at right spot so as not to have a flat head, and not too close to front, not too far back). Bobby pins are simple, I know... but when it counts, and it matters how they look, I can never get it right! (Doing it half asleep in the a.m. it looks great by noon... but putting bangs back for a meeting, no go).
Also... messy bun tutorial too please. Easy to make messy bun with partial pony tail and hair band... but are you using pins?

Thanks!

k | 8:24 PM

i cannot live without spf tinted moisturizer in the summer. because i don't get summers off, i still need to put on full workplace makeup, but the moisturizer is way easier on the face than foundation, and if i get off work early i'm all set for a little sun!

Becky | 8:46 PM

Bobby pins, hair band, Trader Joe's mint lip balm with SPF, neutrogena sunscreen, secret clinical strength deodorant, flip flops!

SaraMinerva | 9:21 PM

Sunscreen first and foremost. My husband and I, in all our freckled albinoness, created two of the cutest little translucent-skinned blond kidlets. We burn in .0005 seconds. I won't use a foundation that does not have spf in it.

Nivea Hydrating Lip Care spf 4. My 3.5 yo daughter and I are addicts.

I have some discoloration from an adolescence (and early 20s) of dealing with acne. If I don't put on anything else, I like to lightly dust my face with a loose powder to even out my skintone. Right now I'm using Physician's Formula purchased at CVS b/c I'm too scared to take two small children to the mall by myself to purchase good makeup.

You are gorgeous with or without makeup. Definitely NOT man-like.

Jenny | 9:58 PM

My summer beauty must have are also bobby pins! I have to get my bangs out of my face on hot days! I also love a light powder foundation for days when I wear makeup.

Anonymous | 10:05 PM

Mine are bobby pins and rubber bands (because 24 year olds can totally pull off Heidi-esque braids. Right? Right?) and light liquid blush, mine is Benetint. And a whole lotta sunscreen.

PS. I'd love to see you do a makeup tutorial again! I suck at eyeshadow. And can you include how you get your bun to be so messy/perfect in the video? Because mine just makes me look like someone's mean old grandma. Not sexy grandma either. Just austere.

Love your makeup! Kate.

My summer must-haves: Clinique Even Better - gives better coverage than a tinted moisturizer, but still feels light and contains SPF! Also, I just picked one of those Goody Up-do hair things - looks like a giant hair pin. I can put my hair up in seconds, it looks kind of messy/fancy and keeps my hair off my neck.

Beachy Chic | 5:51 AM

Laura Mercier tinited moisturizer, Jose Maran Argal oil and neutrogena chap-stick! Love them all and would never be able to survive summer without them!
love you blog: )

Summer must haves:

1. Tinted moisturizer. You'd think my legs have never seen sunlight, so a little bronze tint is EXTREMELY necessary.

2. Elastic bands. For braids, messy buns etc. Anything to get the hair off the sweaty back of the neck.

3. Mascera and blush/bronzer. Makes it look like you have a nice tan, and bigger eyes. Can't go wrong.

Hope I'm not too late - fingers crossed!

Shades, shades, shades! And hat? Though once the hat goes on, it's staying on. Like till bedtime.
